When Porta arrived on Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue in 2022, along an already-great stretch of independent home shops, there was a definite vibe shift. Alice Russotti and Francesca del Balzo, the dynamic duo behind the store, have an eye for colorful, lighthearted homewares that carry a dash of whimsy—as evidenced by the handcrafted treasures (sourced from their travels in Europe) displayed in a space designed by Studio Giancarlo Valle. If it’s not clear yet, I’m a big fan. I’ve gifted their Portugal-made water jugs as wedding presents and count their French glass bud vase among one of my favorite objects. Below, they let us in on the material they think is ready for its moment, as well as some wise registry advice. —Samantha Weiss-Hills, managing editor

What we’re loving: The way a touch of metal can shift the tone of a room, adding texture, depth, and a sense of confident refinement. Whether matte, brushed, mottled, or subtly shiny, a well-placed metal accent grounds a space and gives it edge. When used sparingly, it’s incredibly versatile, alluringly chic, and bold in its own understated way.
Three real-life ways we’d try it:
We love a vintage silver julep cup. It’s perfect to hold a stack of cotton rounds by your bathroom sink or on a table filled with flowers.
Layer metal accents into shelving or a display. A small bowl, box, or object in a metallic finish breaks up wood, ceramic, and glass with a new texture and catches the light in just the right way.
Metal is a grounding material, so place a heavy metal tray or low bowl on a coffee table or sideboard to anchor the arrangement without calling too much attention. It will make a space feel more composed. Or, if you’re the go-big-or-go-home type, try a muted silver coffee table or bar.
